  • Prestige Dental sponsors undergrad prize at British Society of Paediatric Dentists Conference

Prestige Dental are delighted to be the undergraduate sponsor at this year’s British Society of Paediatric Dentists Conference on 19th September at The Lowry Theatre, Manchester.

A judging panel of four consultants and specialists in paediatric dentistry has been selected from across the UK to assess the work of the students who have entered the competition.  Students will produce posters and present their work formally to the panel.  The prize of £100 will be awarded to the undergraduate who the panel considers has demonstrated the highest quality of independent paediatric dental work.

Rachel Jane will be attending the conference for Prestige Dental and said, “Undergraduates are right at the start of their dental careers and we want to recognise and encourage hard work in this important area of dentistry.”

Rachel Jane will be on the Prestige Dental stand at the British Society of Paediatric Dentists Conference on 19th September at The Lowry, Manchester and also at the British Association of Cosmetic Dentistry Conference at the Hilton London Metropole on 9th-10th November 2017.

  • Pulpdent’s ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE – your questions answered

Fred Berk, Vice President of Pulpdent, answers some frequently asked questions about ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE and why it is set to revolutionise restorative dentistry.

    What is ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE?

ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE products from Pulpdent are aesthetic, dental restorative materials that behave in a manner similar to that of natural teeth. They are flowable, resin-based bioactive restoratives with the same indications as traditional and flowable composites, and syringe-dispensing provides ease of application. These innovative bioactive products stimulate the formation of hydroxyapatite and chemically bond to teeth, helping to seal them against secondary decay.

    What are bioactive materials?

Bioactive dental materials imitate nature, play a dynamic role in the mouth and deliver the minerals teeth need to stay healthy. They are moisture-friendly materials that stimulate the natural remineralisation process with the release and recharge of beneficial ions, such as calcium, phosphate and fluoride. In the presence of saliva, they elicit a biological response that forms a layer of apatite and a natural bond at the material-tooth interface.

    How was ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE developed?

ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE was developed over the course of almost 20 years. The mouth is a wet environment, but traditional dental resins are hydrophobic. We had a different idea and developed resin materials that are moisture tolerant and work favorably in the moist oral environment.

We looked at provisional materials and saw that acrylics and bisacrylics were brittle. We recognised that there was a need for more fracture-resistant materials. We synthesized a new molecule, which we patented, by splicing a synthetic rubber molecule into a diurethane dimethacrylate molecule. Studies consistently show that the addition of this molecule to a resin provides far greater toughness, fracture resistance, deflection at break, flexural strength, and flexural fatigue values than all other dental materials.

We are processing glass and silica fillers for composite materials all the time. Our research team began to put these various chemistries and fillers together in different ways to develop products for various dental applications. This is how ACTIVA was born.

How do ACTIVA and bioactive materials differ from passive materials?

Bioactive materials are moisture-friendly and have the ability to transport or store water, which is an essential requirement of bioactivity, because biochemistry only occurs in the presence of water. Bioactive materials can play a dynamic role in the mouth and respond to pH changes in the oral environment. They release and recharge their ionic components, providing teeth with the essential minerals they need to stay healthy. This makes them completely different from passive materials, such as traditional composites, which are hydrophobic, repel water, do not stimulate remineralisation, and have no capacity for bioactivity. Traditional materials are designed to be neutral and do no harm, and as a result, they do not provide any benefits other than filling a space for function and aesthetic purposes.

Why should a dentist switch to ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE?

How are ACTIVA and bioactive materials used clinically?

There are different categories of bioactive materials for various indications. Most are non-aesthetic materials used for endodontic purposes, as dentine replacement materials, or for cementation. These would include calcium-based materials, such as calcium hydroxide, calcium silicate (MTA) and calcium aluminate. ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE materials are the only aesthetic bioactive restorative materials. They are dispensed directly from the syringe like any flowable composite and can be used to restore all classes of cavities.

How does the dentist benefit from ACTIVA?

The greatest cost to a dentist is time. Materials represent only about 6 per cent of revenue in practice, and the cost of bioactive materials is comparable to passive materials. Meanwhile, the injection technique used with ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE takes a fraction of the time of placing a traditional composite.  In cases where there is sufficient retention form in the cavity preparation, ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE does not require a bonding agent, which saves considerable time and money. We are seeing cases that are more than four years old, and they look the same as they did the day they were placed. Dentists have observed that ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE has an affinity for tooth structure and “appears to melt into the tooth.”  This penetration and intimate adaptation to tooth structure has never been seen before with an aesthetic restorative resin material. The result is improved marginal integrity and long-term outcomes, and that means happy patients.

Where can ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE be bought in the UK?

ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE products from Pulpdent are distributed in the UK by Prestige Dental. For more information, please contact Rachel Jane on 07879 140286, email rachelj@prestige-dental.co.uk or contact@pulpdent.uk, or visit www.pulpdent.uk.

  • Pulpdent Award-winning ACTIVA BioACTIVE

Pulpdent Award-winning ACTIVA BioACTIVE Restorative Receives 98% rating At Two-Year Recall

Pulpdent in association with Prestige Dental Ltd are delighted to announce that, in the recent Dental Advisor Award Review, ACTIVA BioACTIVE Restorative received a Clinical Performance rating of 98% at the two-year recall.

Results are based on a two-year review of 158 restorations, placed with and without the use of a bonding agent, and show:

    • A lack of postoperative sensitivity – 0 patient
    • Excellent aesthetics with no need for replacement
    • Excellent resistance to marginal discolouration
    • 99% resistance to wear
    • Excellent retention.

Unlike traditional aesthetic restorative materials, ACTIVA BioACTIVE stimulates apatite formation at the tooth-material interface, which reduces sensitivity, guards against secondary caries, and seals margins against microleakage and failure. The material is moisture-friendly and contains a shock-absorbing rubberized resin component and bioactive glass fillers that mimic the physical and chemical properties of natural teeth. It delivers all the advantages of glass ionomers and composites, is dual-cure, durable, releases more calcium, phosphate, fluoride ions than GI’s and is, Bisphenol A, Bis-GMA, BPA derivative-free.

ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE was awarded the Dental Advisor Top Bioactive Product in 2016 and 2017.

ACTIVA™ BioACTIVE is distributed in the UK by Prestige Dental.  For more information, please contact Rachel Jane on 07879 140286, email rachelj@prestige-dental.co.uk , www.pulpdent.uk.
